5 Climate Change Art Projects
Melting Men (Nele Azevedo)
Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo used 1000 ice sculptures to raise awareness about melting ice in the Arctic and Greenland. But as we can see, it’s not just ice caps that are in danger: climate change has devastating effects on humans as well.
500 Santas (Sudarsan Pattnaik)
Normally we associate Santa with snow and cold, but with ice melting all around his home at the North Pole, he’s a climate refugee in India now. Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik and 30 of his students made 500 Santas to raise awareness about global warming and climate change. They worked with 5000 tons of sand on a beach in Puri, which could also be threatened by rising sea levels.
Ice Receding – Books Reseeding (Basia Irland)
Ice Receding – Books Reseeding is not just a good name, but a very good concept – river water with seeds inside it is frozen in the shape of a book and placed back in the river. The ice books melt and the seeds eventually grow into trees, helping to protect the river banks from erosion. But the most powerful part of the message is the importance of books and education in fighting climate change and other environmental problems.
