Blu’s Street Art about Oil
The huge mural pictured below was part of a collaboration between Italian artist Blu and Brazilian street artist twins Os Gemeos, but we’ll focus on Blu’s side of the building, because oil giant BP just managed to damage another part of our planet with an oil spill.

The jewels in the crown of the oil mogul are, among others, BP, Esso and Shell.
BP was responsible for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, including the deaths of 11 workers. Four years later, it happened again – this time contaminating Lake Michigan, a source of drinking water for 7 Million people in Chicago and its suburbs.
Esso is the oil company behind the Exxon Valdez oil spill, one of the most environmentally destructive oil spills in history which, 25 years later, still isn’t cleaned up.
Shell was sued for their alleged involvement in the executions of nine activists as well as torture, crimes against humanity and a long list of human rights abuses. The court case was settled with Shell paying 15 Million dollars, thereby stopping further evidence from becoming public.
According to The Independent, one of the key witnesses due to appear „testified to standing guard as victims were raped and tortured while Lt-Col Okuntimo was in command. Asked if he ever saw his commander receive money from Shell, he said he witnessed it on two occasions.“
Environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other innocent people were hanged. Shell continued working with the military dictatorship and later admitted paying the Nigerian dictatorship on at least two occasions.
As you can see, much more than environmental destruction is (fossil) fueled by our society’s reliance on oil. The oil mogul in Blu’s mural is drinking our planet dry, referring to the unsustainability of fossil fuels. Please choose your bike over your car whenever you can, use sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and reduce, reuse, recycle.
